The Australian Art Orchestra

'...an ensemble rich in power, subtlety, tonal colours and solo strength unmatched by any other group in the country.'
The Australian

One of Australia's foremost music ensembles, the Australian Art Orchestra's repertoire crosses the divide between traditional orchestra composition and improvised jazz performance.

Since its inception in 1994, the Australian Art Orchestra under the direction of Paul Grabowsky, has developed a well-respected identity for their appreciation of the vitality of improvisation and has become a platform for many of the finest 'spontaneous composers' in Australia.

Sandy has been a member of the AAO since 1995 and has toured internationally with them and written several major works for the ensemble - Testimony and Feast And Lament For The Warrior Queen.

Ten Part Invention

Sandy was a founding member of the ten piece ensemble Ten Part Invention at their premiere performance at the 1986 Adelaide Festival of the Arts. Since then the ensemble has gone on to become widely accepted as Australia's most innovative and exciting contemporary jazz large ensemble, winning several awards and touring both nationally and internationally. Sandy is a Co-Musical Director and has contributed a large body of compositions to the group's repertoire.

Ten Part Invention has been invited to perform at the Chicago Jazz Festival in September 2004.

"The band when it is on fire is one of the most exhilirating ensembles anywhere, combining a thrilling spectrum of colours and blendings with powerful momentum, burning solos and, when the mood takes them, free form conversational digressions that can combine startling almost accidental-sounding dissonant conjunctions with meditative still points of sound. The soloists are among the greatest in Australian jazz." John Clare, Rufus Records website >

The catholics

Led by outstanding bass player Lloyd Swanton, the catholics are an enduring project with over a decade at the forefront of Australian music. The band's mixture of strong grooves and "user friendly" compositions has made it accessible for a wider audience without making any compromises. Since forming in 1990 the band has recorded five albums (one, Simple, which was nominated in JazzTimes Critics' Picks as one of the top ten for 1995) made several tours of Australia, Canada and Europe and appeared at most of Australia's leading venues and festivals.

"The richness, diversity and accessibility of The catholics suffuses every track. It Is their virtuosity, imagination and the inventiveness of Lloyd Swanton's writing which makes this music so successful ... no written description can do justice to this music. If you've heard the whisper, which is now becoming a roar, that the new Australian jazz Is great fun, then search out a copy of this superb album" Rolling Stone

austraLYSIS
